# Is gastric acidity an allergy?

Gastric acidity is not an allergy.  
However, some symptoms commonly associated with allergies or asthma—such as itchy, watery eyes or a persistent cough—may sometimes be misinterpreted.

Emerging research suggests that, in certain cases, these symptoms may instead be linked to a form of acid reflux called silent reflux (laryngopharyngeal reflux). Unlike typical GERD, silent reflux does not usually present with classic digestive symptoms like heartburn, belching, or nausea.  
Instead, it may cause symptoms such as hoarseness, chronic cough, noisy breathing, or even feeding difficulties.

If “allergy-like” or respiratory symptoms persist despite using antihistamines or cold remedies, silent reflux may be worth considering.
